KRL canvas: a walk through art and community murals

Destination KRL looks forward to introducing the latest addition to its vibrant mural collection: a captivating piece by the talented Gina Kiel.

This new mural is situated at the Lyall Bay Junction. Lyall Bay Junction, known for its diverse array of boutique retail, health, beauty, fitness, and food outlets, is set to be transformed by Gina's artwork, adding a burst of creativity and inspiration to the area.

The selected design, featuring a sea spirit or goddess, captures the unique spirit and natural beauty of the area, promising to become a beloved landmark that embodies community, and creativity.

It promises to be a great addition to the murals in Kilbirnie, Rongotai, and Lyall Bay that currently include "DROP" by Ruth Robertson-Taylor, inspired by Fat Freddy's Drop; a mural on Pak'nSave by Ken Samonte, themed around pareidolia (the human ability to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness); "Te Taiao" by Miriama Grace-Smith, depicting local wildlife; and David Brown's geometric pieces reflecting the area's seismic history. Timon Maxey's works along Bay Road celebrate local scenes, while Sheyne Tuffery's murals recall historical tramways and speedways. Each mural adds a unique layer to KRL's cultural and visual narrative.

To enhance your exploration of KRL's artistic spirit, we've developed an interactive map that guides you through the diverse murals adorning our streets. This map, easily accessible and user-friendly, allows you to discover the beauty and stories behind each piece, including the works on the CARTERS Building Supplies wall, Pak'nSave Kilbirnie, and more. The new mural by Gina Kiel is highlighted in pink, offering an inviting glimpse into the art piece and its background.

We invite you to embark on a journey of discovery and inspiration. Walk through our streets and immerse yourself in the mural movement. The interactive map is your gateway to experiencing the art that the KRL area offers, with Gina Kiel's latest masterpiece waiting to be unveiled.

Happy exploring!
