New-look crossings at the intersection of Rongotai Road, Onepu Road and Evans Bay Paradetaking shape
The upgrade of the intersection of Rongotai Road, Onepu Road and Evans Bay Parade is taking shape
and there's not too much more to do now. Work on two corners - near Pak'nSave and the black apartment building - is complete (see the photo above). The remaining work in the vicinity of KFC will be finished in about two weeks’ time.
From then on, most of the work will be in the north-east corner (on the eastbound side of Rongotai Road) where we have already made a start on reshaping a traffic island and developing new crossing points. This is the last part of the intersection to be transformed. JFC has been doing the work in sections, moving around the intersection in a clockwise direction, to help minimise disruption and keep traffic flowing as normally as possible.
At times during the day, the right turn into Onepu Road from Evans Bay Parade will be temporarily out of action. A detour will be in place at these times for traffic. Buses heading south will instead use Ross and Coutts streets and a temporary southbound bus stop that will be in place outside Rita Angus on Coutts Street.
Work on Onepu Road near Coutts Street starts next week
Weather-permitting, work in and around the intersection of Coutts Street and Onepu Road is due to get under way from next Monday 26 August.
Heading south from the intersection alongside Rita Angus Retirement Village on Onepu Road, our contractor JFC will be developing a 40m section of bike path down to the driveway to the bus barn car park. This path will be adjacent to the road and separated from the adjoining footpath by a line of planter boxes.
Work hours will be in line with others in the area – Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm.
The crew will also be installing traffic signal lights for bikes and trigger sensors for them around the intersection, a new speed hump in the slip-lane near Westpac, and making some minor road marking changes. This work at the intersection, and south of it, will take about three weeks.
Work to install the new bus stop platform and bike connection will follow
Work on the southbound bus stop on Onepu Road near the Spice Emporium will follow the work at the intersection. Weather permitting, this is likely to start in mid-September and take about three weeks. There will be a temporary bus stop in place nearby on Onepu Road.
After that, from late September or early October, we’ll be putting in the new bike lanes on Onepu Road between Rongotai Road and Coutts Street. This will help complete a safe biking connection between the city and Lyall Bay. The work will include installing rubber bike lane separators, marker poles and yellow no parking lines.
The aim is to complete all the work – the intersection of Rongotai Road, Onepu Road and Evans Bay Parade, and the work in Onepu Road – by the end of October so the whole area is looking good for summer.
