- What inspired you to start your business?
I had always wanted my own business one day, but it was only when I was made redundant that the opportunity came up. I had been working for a few corporate companies as a buyer since returning to live back in NZ in 2000. There was no option to do the same job unless I moved cities but our life and heart was in Wellington. I had always enjoyed working in Startups and it felt easy to start my own business rather than buy something already established.
-What do you enjoy most about being part of the Kilbirnie, Rongotai, and Lyall Bay community?
The local community are very appreciative to have my business on their doorstep so they don’t have to go into town. They have been extremely loyal and supportive during some challenging times over the past 8 years.
Growing up and having a part-time job in the area was full circle and familiar. I also love being near the beach and the dog park, as they bring me joy.
There are also many amazing business owners, and there is a sense of support. We are fully self-sufficient in our area.
- How do you stay motivated and inspired?
I think of the artists I work with and connecting them with their new home/owner. I look out my door at the sea and feel that not many people have that opportunity. I also like being my own boss, making my own rules (or not), and not having to abide by corporate rules!
- What unique qualities do you think Kilbirnie, Rongotai, and Lyall Bay offer to businesses?
The sense of a local community and a variety of businesses located in close proximity.
- What changes or improvements would you like to see in Kilbirnie, Rongotai, or Lyall Bay?
More local businesses opening up making the area a real destination. Also, better lighting and public toilets in the Rongotai/beach /beach area would provide better safety and services for the visitors.
