KRL Canvas: A Walk Through Art and Community Murals

Destination KRL is proud to celebrate the vibrant mural trail that continues to grow across Kilbirnie, Rongotai, and Lyall Bay.

Over the past year, a few stunning new additions have joined the collection — including a striking mural by Gina Kiel at Lyall Bay Junction, depicting a sea spirit that captures the natural beauty and creative energy of the area. At Ākau Tangi Sports Centre, Len Hetet’s new mural Tāwaha ki Te Ao Mārama (realms to the world of light) features a powerful series of gold, blue and green auripo – circular whirlpools that ripple across the 100-metre black wall. The work explores the deep physical and spiritual connection between people, land, and sea.

These join a growing number of murals that already define our streets — from DROP by Ruth Robertson-Taylor and Te Taiao by Miriama Grace-Smith, to David Brown’s geometric landscapes and Timon Maxey’s cheerful local scenes.
