Introducing Kilbirnie, Rongotai and Lyall Bay

Kilbirnie

Kilbirnie

Is Wellington’s playground, with the aquatic centre and facilities for indoor and outdoor sport all year round. Combine your game with a quick and convenient shop, check out the craft and op shops, then catch a tasty feed from different world cuisines. You’ll leave a winner every time.

Rongotai

Rongotai

is where the work gets done. There’s a wide range of clever and creative people busily working away on furniture, vehicles, beer, and even ice cream. Plus there’s shopping opportunities big and small, from New Zealand’s biggest brands right through to crafty wee galleries and specialist outdoor shops. Explore!

Lyall Bay

Lyall Bay

Has Wellington’s Freshest Air©. Walk the dog, catch a wave, spot a plane. Don’t leave without enjoying fish & chips or an ice cream (or both!) by the beach. And if the air is too fresh for you, pop into a local café for fresh food and hot coffee. No need to rush home just yet!

Message from the Destination KRL Chair

Looking back at the past year, we’ve seen our business community adapt to tougher economic times and find new ways to grow, despite the challenges. Beyond advocacy, we've also been focused on fostering stronger business connections.

The Chair’s message below shares key highlights and what’s ahead for 2024/2025 as we continue working together to strengthen Kilbirnie, Rongotai, and Lyall Bay.

As we review the past year, it’s clear that our business community is moving forward through the challenging times with resilience and determination.  Our engagement with WCC and GWRC on key issues remains active. We are opposing the introduction of paid car parking in suburban areas, supporting the development of the Eastern Transport Corridor, and have provided  feedback to the Long-Term Plan to ensure it aligns with the needs of our community.

One of our main priorities has been strengthening business connections. Through surveys, visits, and networking events, we’ve been actively listening to your needs and working to create opportunities for businesses to collaborate and share ideas.

Our commitment to enhancing local spaces continues with the completion of the Lyall Bay Junction mural and the upcoming Akau Tangi  Sports Centre mural, both adding vibrancy to the area. We’ve also initiated work on new KRL signage to create a stronger identity,  improve navigation,  and enhance visibility for local businesses, aiming to attract more foot traffic and support the area's overall economic activity.

Looking ahead to 2024/2025, we will focus on several key initiatives to support our business community. Our engagement with WCC will continue, addressing important issues such as  WCC spending, the large rates differential between commercial and residential rates, suburban metered car parking, Eastern Transport Corridor discussions, and earthquake-prone buildings.

We'll be advancing the KRL 2040 Vision.

Additionally, we will amplify our advocacy efforts by collaborating with other Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) to ensure our collective voice is heard and has a greater impact on key issues affecting our communities.

Together, we’ll continue to strengthen our business community and and ensure a positive future for Kilbirnie, Rongotai, and Lyall Bay.
